Everybody says that it is important to utilize keywords in your site.How do you know what keywords to use? Is there a way to find out what the most popular words are?

Be unique in your way. You cant choose a keyword which has great competition. If you are unique in choosing your keyword, you could be ranked at top pages in google.

Put yourself in your target market's shoes and ask - "what would I be searching for?"

Start with that and narrow them down using a keyword analysis tool such as Word Tracker..

Its a simple thing to do, just add some important words which will be very reliable for your content and put it in tags. Google just takes the tagged words as the keywords and mostly if it is unique means, then the site would be shortlisted at the top.

To know what keywords to use first know what is your site and what it is all about. then think of keywords relevant to it. then, check its daily search and competitors. stay with more search and less competitors rather than less search more competitor...

to me, plugin some general keywords that is on your niche on some keyword tools first and see what are those keywords have most search volume about your website or niche
e.g. if you are selling sports gear, than I will start narrow what kind of sports gear I will sell.. tennis? golf, ice hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball or ??? then you need to figure out who has the most search volumes using word tracker...
