I used to pay $50 for a 500-word article. That was 2 years ago. I don't know how the rates are nowadays but with the recession, I guess they've gone lower.

I think the recession has had an effect, but it's really Internet "pay-per-click" article-writing sites that have had a huge effect on shaping a new psychology among all whole new class of writers -- Internet writers.

Today, thousands of people are willing to spend sveral hours a day submitting stories for literaly pennies a day.

What's disturbing about this to me is that it has "dumbed down" the expectationsof tons of people who are interested in making a living as writers.

Writing is hard work -- think about it -- would you be willing to go wash dishes for a local resturant for three hours a day, and be paid a dollar or two for all your work?

Most people would say that's crazy -- yet they go ahead and spends hours submitting to sites like Xomba or blogevolve, and they are lucky if they get a few pennies a day.

True writers should take their craft seriously and charge what they are worth -- if they are skilled -- or don't write at all.

With so many "writers" willing to work for slave wages, it degrades the business for all of us.

Well, can i work for u then? Really, I got so tired with many -sorry to say- indian's buyers who paid really low (infact I got ditched twice, they didnt pay after I send them articles which they said good. They about to give me another assignment, but I refuse before I receive the 1st payment. Turn out they never got back again)

Please, if you think about hiring a writer, please consider me in. Just test me before you decide whether I am qualified or not. I never rewrite even that's what they asked, I always write the whole article under my own research.

You know, I think the same way too, Reba. I just started this whole new job as freelance writer online. And I am so surprised with the low "price". But i thought that's how it work around here (internet).

I am now even surprise, to know that you get really high payment per article. From what I see, most people act as middle men, giving job to whom they think desperate. I was newbie, and I got scammed with those type of guys. They offer $1 to $1.5 top! and they requested us to submit like 10 articles within 24 hours, one guy even asked me to send him 20 articles in 24 hours, for only $1 per 500 words! Cmon.. I got so mad by this low type of people.

Default Rate varies

rate is dependent on quality of writing and your niche

Do you charge per word or do you give a fix price?

Thumbs up

Usually I write for websites and they give me the price per article. It's between 3$ and 15$ for 400 words. If you write for a private client you can ask for 15$ per article. This is a reasonable price. I heard of writers who are working for 1$ per article. This is a waste of time.
Good luck!
