Default Failing at an MLM

I was a member of an MLM for almost 4 years. I did well for the first 3 years. I was making between 2500 to 4000 per month. But it was not easy for me. During the end of my third year, my sponsor disappeared. Soon after, my downline started to disappear and the end result was I had little to no business.

At first I was very hurt. The reason is I wanted so much for it to work and I had put a lot of time and money into this business. After some months had passed, I started to reflect on all the things I had learned from this business opportunity.

I may have failed, and I failed miserably, I am no longer angry or bitter. Why? Because I learned a lot. I learned about marketing. I learned how to put out business card flyers. When I first started my business, if the phone rang, I would not answer the phone. Now, I do not fear the phone. I talk on the phone all the time. I call customers and I feel fairly comfortable talking to people.

Many of the skills I learned I am applying to my current business opportunity and they are working. I don't know why I could not do it before as a member of the MLM, but I guess because I practiced, I have gotten better.

In conclusion, I may have failed in the MLM, but I also feel I succeeded because I now have skills that I can use for my current business where before I did not have these skills. So, failure is not such a bad thing as long as you learn from the experience.

Wow! You were making that much money with an MLM. I thought all MLM programs were scam. I've always stayed away from them.

A friend at work told me that to succeed in a MLM, you really have to be a pain in the a** and bug family and friends to join the program until they don't want to talk to you anymore

Cool

I'm glad you're positive about your experience. I also tried an MLM and quit because it as almost impossible to do it without tremendous amounts of stress. MLMs are not the best type of business. But its good to see that you are moving forward. Much success to you!

I think I did well because I did a lot of ground work. I put out a lot of flyers and I advertised in newspapers in many parts of the U.S. I said I spent a lot of money and this is where I was spending my money was on newspaper ads.

I was taught that you to be successful at placing ads, you need to advertise in newspapers that had at least 300,000 in circulation. It didn't have to be in one paper. You could use a number of newspapers for 300,000 cumulative. The cost could vary anywhere from 300, 500, or more.

My team also used what was known as "email campaigns" where we paid for 6 months of access to a job website. We were allowed to collect up to 10,000 emails per month and upload the emails to our autoresponder. Of course, with the spam accusations caused Herbalife to shut this marketing method down. But, when we had it going, it brought in a lot of people. The cost for this was $2000 every 6 months.

Thus, I made money, but I also spent a lot of money.

Congrats on not giving up.

MLM can be hard but it can be easy too. It depends on what MLM that you are in.

You Strength to persevere is inspiring. You are strong and that is heart. No business is easy at first and you became an entrepreneur. When you learn these skills you know how to fish, to provide for yourself and survive.

I too spent a lot of money in my early years on businesses. Success is a journey, If it's something you really like - Don't quite, no matter how hard it hurts, you just have to believe.

Not all MLM are scams. Its unfortunate that some bad MLM's gave network marketing a bad name. MLM is the only business that made the most people millionaires.

Keep up the good work!!!

Wow I didn't know that FortuneLeaf. So many people I know at work think MLM's are all scams. I don't believe that. In fact, Robert Kiyosaki thinks that MLM's are good for people to join who want their own business but don't want to come up with a marketing plan or business plan of their own.

The MLM was was very legitimate. They have been around 26 or 27 years and are in 63 or 64 countries. They are Herbalife. I love the products. I just don't think I was ready, but I did learn a lot from the company. Many of the things I learned I am applying to my current business and for some reason they are working now, whereas before, I did not have much success with them.

Thank you for your support. NO, I don't ever plan on giving up. After 20 years of working at a job, I have learned that jobs don't work for most people. I am more broke than when I first started working. Six downsizings can do that to a person.

Network marketing gets a bad rap mainly because of people failing or friends they know fail so that starts the I hate network marketing campaigns. Network marketing is not for everyone. Its not easy, what business is. It can be fun, and it can not be at time. All in all it does work if you work it. thanks

Most people market MLM's wrong and thats why the retention rate is terrible. If they are telling you how easy it is and to bug all your friends and neighbors and make "your list" then you are doomed

Yes, you are both right. Many people in network marketing are trained improperly. I know I was. It is all about "getting them in the deal." That does not work.

People new to having their own business should be trained on selling, marketing, and effective communication. New business owners should also be trained on how to use these skills to effectively connect with people and build relationships. You cannot have a successful business if you don't build relationships.

From what I have seen about most MLM advertising isn't about the actual business but was about how you can get rich so fast. Can you make allot of money with MLM, Absolutely. But you wont do it over night. See thats not what they tell you. It takes work to succeed. Nothing in this world comes free and nothing comes easy if you want to be successful.
