Default What is Multi-level Marketing (MLM)?

Here is the wikipedia of Multi-level Marketing (MLM) from wikipedia.
I don't know of anybody who has joined a MLM and made any money from it. Most of them are a waste of time and money.
Unless I am proven wrong, I would advice anybody to stay away from it.

Quote:
Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a business model that combines direct marketing with franchising.
Multi-level marketing businesses function by recruiting salespeople (also called Distributors, Independent Business Owners, IBOs, Franchise Owners, Sales Consultants, Beauty Consultants, Consultants, etc.) to sell a product and offer additional sales commissions based on the sales of people recruited into their downline, an organization of people that includes direct recruits, recruits' recruits, etc. This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager, but in some MLM programs, there can be seven or more levels of people receiving royalties from one person's sales.

i beg to differ from the posts made above . I have friends who are in MLM in various companies. 2 in particular did extremely well in Mary Kay and Avon to the point of earning company paid cars, company awarded fur coats and multiple trips to rome, Paris, and Australia.

I just returned from a meeting last night where I met participants in the company I am in now, who were able to purchase homes, cars and pay cash for their children's college tuition.
I am so sorry that you did not have the opportunity to meet people who did well in legitimate MLM companies.

No pyramid schemes anymore. That's what people just want to say when they don't do research. Also, they use "Ponzi Scheme". People sound big and bad when they talk about that, but don't know much more about what has gone into MLM company's these days. Do your Due Diligence and you'll see what the truth is behind many MLM company's (although some can be scams).....

Yes, thanks for clearing up the misconceptions! Network marketing or multi-level marketing (MLM) is a legitimate way to market a real product or service through a network of consumers via word of mouth advertising. As long as there is a product or service being bought and sold it is not a pyramid.

Think of all the network marketing companies you know of that are wonderful - Avon, Mary Kay, Discovery Toys, Amway, Pampered Chef, etc.

I'm with a great company with extremely worthwhile products and great prices - Bookwise.

Thanks for passing along the correct information so we don't perpetuate this negativity associated with our industry.

Thanks!

I'm curious, have you been convinced that MLM are not scams yet. Haven't you seen anyone driving down the street in a Pink Cadilac with the Mary Kay symbol on it? Do you have Tupperware in your house? That such an unfair hit below the belt.

Who hasn't bought Avon? That's another successful MLM. Herbalife? I ahve met so many people in various MLM companies that did well. My friend sent her kids to college by making money in Pre Paid Legal.

Yes, there are many legit MLM and network marketing business opportunities out there. I was a member of Herbalife. I am not now because, after doing pretty well for about 3 years, the business kind of imploded. My upline, his upline and so on left and I really had no guidance or trainings in which to send my people to. This is not to say that Herbalife or any internet marketing company, such as the one I am a member of, is not legitimate or is a pyramid scam. You just have to do your due diligence and be sure that the opportunity is the right one for you.

Also, keep in mind, success does not happen overnight. To have a successful home based business, you need to work harder on yourself, meaning acquire some skills as a business person, then you will begin to see growth in your business. This is especially true for people who are new to having a business of their own. It takes time. Give your self a break and enjoy the opportunity of having a business. Having a business of your own can be so rewarding in many ways other than just making money.
