I have an old golden retriever that is almost fifteen and a hamster named herby. I would like to adopt a cat from the animal shelter one day soon because cats are good for you health wise seeing how they are so calming.

Work2befree,

You said you have a chihuahua. We got one this last Christmas. A male, short haired chihuahua named Fluffy. Now, how a male dog with short hair got a name like Fluffy, I don't know! My niece named it before we got it, and despite all efforts of my wife and me to the contrary, the name stuck. It's still a puppy, though I think it may be getting close to a year old now.

We also have a 10 year old mutt named Goldie. She's a golden brown color and she's such a sweetie. There were several other dogs in her litter, but as far as we know, Goldie is the only one still alive. (Let's just say I know someone who can be hard on pets too!)

I don't have any cats because I'm allergic to them, but I remember growing up my grandmother had a cat at her house named Fluffy (at least with this one, the name was appropriate ) She only had one eye. I remember liking the cat, but for some reason, it would run away more than it came to me.

Last year, we had to put down a white German Sheppard that we had inherited. She weighed close to (if not over) 100 pounds, and as she became advanced in years and started loosing control of her body, it just got to the point where we could no longer care for her because to move her required great effort. She was a nice dog, though she didn't get along well with Goldie, and I do miss her.

I've enjoyed hearing about everyone's pets!

Grady

Hi everyone, I have 1 cat and 1 dog. The cat we have is my daughters and she takes care of her very well. She tends to pick up on my daughters moods (kind of scary since she is bi-polar) My dog is 12 which is a lab/cross, and my son takes care of her. It will be hard when she passes since he was 3 when we got her from the pound.
I have always strayed more towards owning a dog more that a cat. Always BIG dogs I do not know why, but that is the kind of dog I head straight to.

Take care!

How big have your dogs been?

Misty (the one that is no longer with us) weighed over 110 pounds when we first got her. That was one reason we had so much trouble with her as she got older. She got to the point where she laid around all day and one of her hind legs would just go to sleep, so she couldn't stand up on it.

I miss her, but she was a handful! Definitely the biggest dog I ever had.

Default Hi

Sorry to hear about Misty Grady. Its hard to lose an animal you love.

My biggest dog was a belguim shepard (so the vet said) But I think he was crossed with a St. Bernard. He was sooooooo lovable. A friend found him on the side of the road (no owner, checked). I fell in love with him as soon as I seen him. He was around 3-4 months old and was 2ft tall already. I ended up calling him Bear. Just a big lovable poobear.
Awwwww....the memories..........good times

I used to own a Siberian Husky named Stauce. He was a beautiful dog. He had blue eyes that used to glow red at night. My father got him from his law professor. We didn't have a choice in his name. I was in the third or fourth grade at the time. Stauce was a little puppy, but at 6 months he was past my waist. We lived in Ohio at the time and Stauce used to pull me and some of the other kids in the neighborhood on my sled. I used to have to take him for walks, but he was so strong that if there was snow on the sidewalks, I used to stoop down and let Stauce pull me down the street.

Unfortunately, my father did not treat the dog very well. When he was 6 months old, we were moving back to California and we could not take Stauce with us. My father found a breeder to take care of Stauce. Although I tried my best to take care of Stuace and keep him away from my dad, I was still too young and really did not have much control over his environment. So when I got the news that he would be moving to a family that has a lot of yard for him to run around in and other dogs to play with, I was happy because I knew Stauce would be in a better home, but I cried none the less.

I am glad to hear a happy ending work2bfree, but it is still hard.
With my big PooBear dog, my kids use to ride on his back, until one day my niece who was 9, was on him and he took off after a cat. Needless to say, she had got a concussion from this. To this day (she is 22) still brings up how my dog took off with her on his back until she was finally flung on to the pavement. Memories.........
I haven't thought about my dog in a long time..........thanks for bringing up the topic. They are very good memories that brings a smile and tears.

Take care everyone and thank you for sharing

I think pets are such a blessing. My mother, father and sister are not really animal people. My mother and sister treat animals like animals, not as part of the family. My father barely can tolerate being around pets. When he stayed with me at my home, I had just 2 cats at the time. He would lock both of my cats in my bedroom while I was at work. I did speak to him about this, but to no avail. My father is almost 70 now and he has not changed since I was a child. I just don't let him around my pets.

On the other hand my brother and I are animal lovers. My brother's wife rescues pets and nurses them back to health and finds loving homes for them. My brother stayed with me too and my cats loved him. I think my brother and his wife would love my chihuahua, Sugar. They currently have 2 cats. ONe of their cats, Chrissy, in cross-eyed. You cannot tell whether she is looking at you or not. It is so weird. There is also Kimba who is an all white cat that they rescued. The lost Bud whom they have raised since it was a tiny kitten. They were trying to rush him to emergency, but he died in my brother's wife's arms. Bud was about 15 or 16 years old. One of my cats, Cornflake, is close to Bud's age. He is 14.

I really respect the people who go out of there way to rescue animals. They are all blessings in disguise.
I just wish people would smarten up and spay and neuter their animals. That is always one of the first things I do with my animals. My whole family is like that, and the only place we go for a pet in through the humanes society. It really is one of the hardest places to walk into. So many animals who need loving homes.......very sad.....
