Default Relationship Between the JOB and it's Employees

I work on a team that is currently under the gun in getting a new online banking system out the door. There have been many long hours and late nights and in some cases, no sleep for many of us.

We are to go live next week, but during all of this, I have noticed some interesting things at the company. People are leaving left and right. I have always believed that you cannot work people to death and give them little in return. This company seems to believe that employees will stay around no matter what. This is not true in the technology field. In the technology industry, if someone is not happy with a company, they start looking for a job and if the jobs are available, an employee will leave.

Since being involved in this company, which is just under a year, I have seen 6 or 7 people leave in the past month. And, this is during crucial times when we are in the midst of trying to get out some extremely important projects. I am sure they have their reasons and I don't judge. I know I have done the same thing in the past and I am currently considering leaving this company now. I have not been happy with what I have seen thus far and the promises that were made to me, have not transpired. I don't trust a company that breaks its word.

I know many people at this company are extremely unhappy and this is why many are leaving. Just a couple of weeks ago we had one of the HR reps at our office I believe to see and talk to people to find out how they feel and why so many are leaving.

I suggest that as an owner of your business, you have to treat your people right; especially the good employees. Just saying that we give you a job and therefore you should be happy with what we are giving you is not enough. I could go on about this, but I will stop here. I do know that there are others who are in crucial positions are getting ready to leave the company. They are going to be really hurting once these individuals do leave.

You are so right work. Too many employers treat people like they come a dime a dozen, which good employees do not. They often wonder why they seem to have a revolving door, always blaming the employees as not being able to cut it.

Employees should not have to 'cut it' as the owners, or even managers, do. They are their to make a pay check, not build your business up like you did in the beginning.

Too many people can get money to start a business, but they do not have the brains, or willingness to learn, to make it work well past a certain Do It Yourself point. Once you hire your first employee your thinking has to become completely different.

You are so right Pendelton. Do you think that these employers will ever learn?

Today is are "Go Live!" date for a major project. I unfortunately, am unable to be in support of this release for in case of major issues or problems with my piece of the implementation. Reason being, I think I got so stressed out from this project and the long hours, that my body has now turned on me. I am at home experiencing some serious health issues. My doctor advised me to stay home and just rest. I have some tests I need to go through to find out what is going on with me. I am currently waiting on the blood tests they took on me yesterday. But, it is strange that within the past two weeks, I started having this problem during the times we are getting close to our deadline. I hate not being there. I want to support my coworkers, but my health is important.

This also raises another issue. Many employers seem to work their employees to death almost like slaves. I know my coworkers like what they do, but I was starting to see some changes in them. Many of their spouses have been complaining about them working so much and not helping out more with the house and kids. You should hear some of the phone conversations they have with their spouses. It is unfortunate, because I know we have another major project coming up as soon as this one is complete and another one after this next one. It is a never-ending cycle, but this is the life that most jobs offer. They downsize and then work the remaining employees more. We just went through 2 downsizings within the past 2 years. On top of this more employees are leaving.

No, they will keep their revolving employment door. They seem to form groups, like high school cliques, that do nothing more than complain to each other about not being able to find good help. Good help being the type of person that does the job and does not complain, or quit, over their abusive treatment.

Quietly talk to some of the other employees, current and past, and se if they want to start a competitor of your employer. All the skills that you and the others have could be put to good use giving your former employer a stiff jab of a lesson.

A no compete clause can be quashed in court, especially showing the treatment you all got.

Yes Pendelton, I do agree. Unfortunately, I have become so burnt out from working in this industry that I am no longer interested in programming or software development unless I am doing it for my business, no clients.

I think many of my coworkers do want to have a business of their own. I believe that they think it is too hard to do. So, most if not all will be working till retirement age. As long as they have some time to spend with their families and friends they are content. It is what I call their "comfort zone". They are staying in their comfort zone and I don't blame them.

Me, I am always looking outside of the box. What can I do to make this happen. Working at a job is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I don't think they realize how hard it is going to get when they get into their 50's or 60's. There is such a thing as age discrimination. They probably are not even thinking of this either. Unless you are at an executive management level, life will become more difficult as you get older. Competition will be tough.

Unfortunately, layoffs have become very popular. Because of the economy, there are expected to be more downsizings coming. Employees, good or bad, do not have any control of this. Bottom line is most important.

Other things that are expected to show up more is in order to save money, many companies are looking to outsource to other countries; like India, for cheaper labor. I hear more and more about this. I used to work for a company that had outsourced their help desk department to India.

It is nice to enjoy your job and love what you do at you job. Like I said, I used to be one of those folks, but I think it is also to pay attention to the changes that are taking place. It is best to be prepared than unprepared when these changes start to take place.

I don't know a whole lot jonnyrage. I do read the news and I try to keep informed about the changes in economy and the job industry. I know that these changes can affect me and my family's life.

I know that one day soon, my business will reach a point where I can walk away from my job. But until then, it is best to keep informed. Information is power. The more informed you are, the better prepared you are when you are forced to make some hard choices. Also, if you are aware as to what events are about to take place, you can the put plans in place to avoid catastrophe that may be coming your way.

I thank you for your kudos jonnyrage. :-)
