I have heard this phrase used alot but have yet to understand what backlinks are, can anyone shed some light?

Backlinks are links from other websites that point back to your site. The more you have from sites with higher page rank, the higher the search engines will rank your site. Make sense?

Yes, backlinks from high ranking sites will definitely help your rankings and in turn increase your traffic. That's why submitting your sites to high ranking sites like Digg, Stumbleupon and Reddit is important.

Also, when you submit articles to high page rank sites like Ezine Articles and Go Articles, this gives you one-way backlinks which is even better! Of course you place a link back to your site, using your targeted keywords as the link, in your author box.

For example, I go to a blog and make a comment and leave a link. That link is found by google and traced back to my website. That's a back link.
