COMMISSION ONLY EMPLOYMENT Is NOT FOR 97% Of POPULATION
Good topic.
Having not started in the sales industry, but hearing for years when I first entered the corporate world, I discounted it as nothing, but as I have learned, not everyone is cut out to be in sales, and even more so on commission only basis. I switched to sales because I was selling more product than sales staff were based on my customer service and people skills, so I have been selling ever since, selling myself. lol
Most people hate selling, almost as much as most people hate being sold. Nothing will change that, and the car salerperson is perfect example, along with appliance sales, furniture, insurance, etc., people don't like being hard sold or followed around, so I learned a secret to my success, I would approach a customer and simply say, I know, most don't want to be bothered, but every once in a while a person does, so I am asking only if you happen to be that rare person. I would always get a smile and a thanks, and when the needed help, they would ask for me. Simple, effective, and it made me a ton of money over the years.
Bottom line, very few are cut out to be sales people, nerve racking for most not to know how much your next check will be for, and training people to be salespeople is usually a waste of time unless a person is a natural, as I call it, just as I was, a people person, a listener, had empathy, passion, etc., it takes more than canned presentation to be good at selling anything is what I have learned. Anyone who does not sell on commission is not a good salesperson, and this is the reason the car industry and insurance pays there newbies a base salary now. So few would even consider a commission only job that they had to do something. lol
Success to all, Mike
