I have worked on sites on BlueHost, they seemed to be good.
Same with Hostgator.
godaddy is to be avoided. I worked on a set of 100+ sites on their servers and had nothing but grief. They essentially held the data base hostage making it difficult for the owner to move. They had locked him out from parts of his installed programs, making them read only. It was an awful nightmare for him.

Cheaper definitely isn't better. The only hosting company I can recommend at the moment is HostGator. The only thing I don't like about them is that they require a phone confirmation.
I can recommend a few hosting companies to avoid though.

I too prefer hostgator. However, their billing system is a bit messed up. I would get charged twice a month then sometimes go for a very long time without ever being billed and I had to call them.

As for midphase, be careful as in one of their packages they actually own your domain name. I was very annoyed when I wished to move the server only to realize that they owned my domain name. I never went back.

If you choose to use godaddy, just make sure that you don't buy your damain name from them as well. I've heard horror stories where if you decide to change your hosting to somewhere else, they won't give up your domain name.

Personally, I prefer SBI! because it is an all-in-one webhosting service. You get your domain name, webhosting, 25 wordtracker queries, autoresponders, form builders, block by block website building, shoot they even do a lot of the Search Engine Optimization for you. They have tons of neat tools to use as well. It may cost a little more but once you add in all of "goodies" that you will have to pay extra for elsewhere, the price is a GREAT deal.

A bump-date here.

I've been busy getting a project set up and I am way behind schedule. The reason. I used 1&1 as the host for this project.
The problems I had.
Long time delays getting anything done, use the click and build tool to install anything and you can be told 30 minutes to 12 hours before it is ready. Not acceptable.
Once you install an application with their click and build you can not make any adjustments to it. I needed to install a custom theme and could not.
Creating a database takes forever it seems.
If you upload and try to install your own applications you have to fight with their tech support, since their first replay to any error is, it is your fault, you are not doing it right. Even when you point out that the server error is coming from a misconfiguration of their PHP set up, with proof right on the install page. They hem and haw trying to not fix it so you will be a good sheep and just go with what they decided the flow should be.
Their servers, with the various sub domains are a mess, which is simple enough to tell when you see how your sites, domains, data bases, and everything else is scattered across so main servers.

If you value any control over your site(s) do not use them.

I've been using Webintellects for the last couple of years for one of my sites, and I've been very pleased with them. They have plans for both Windows and Linux servers. Capabilities may vary depending on service chosen.
